The chaotic scenes witnessed at the ANC Eastern Cape conference is indicative of the landmines ahead for President Cyril Ramaphosa in his bid for a second term as ANC leader.

A tightened security presence, with masked private security guards, and police nyalas being called in amid delays at the congress were all indicative of the high stakes and divisions in the province.

The conference saw a failed court bid and pandemonium about credentials, which determine who can participate in the conference and, as a result, vote for the leadership.
