A 25-year-old woman from Bethesldorp in the Eastern Cape, is expected to appear in court in connection with the murder of her partner's nine-year-old daughter on Monday afternoon.

"It is alleged that at about 09:00, on Monday 28 March 2022, the suspect, who is also the girlfriend [of] the deceased's father, fetched the child from his house in Extension 28 in Bethelsdorp to take her for a haircut.

"During the day, the suspect hitchhiked with the child, Quinisha Sebrand, to Maitland Beach," Colonel Priscilla Naidu said in a statement on Tuesday.

Eastern Cape police said the child had swum in the ocean, and that at some time during the afternoon, "she was strangled and left on the beach".

The woman went to the satellite police station in Sea View to report the incident at approximately 21:00.

The body of the child was found on the beach and the woman was detained on a charge of murder.

The motive behind the killing is not yet known to the police.

She is expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
