In just over six weeks, South Africans are electing new mayors and local councillors, with the impact set to be felt in cash-strapped households, on poorly maintained roads and run-down towns.

When voters elect their mayors, they are effectively voting for someone to keep a watchful eye over their municipal taxes and infrastructure.

Although it is the country's sixth municipal election, its impact remains big.
