The DA has rejected the ANC's assertion it is trying to "elbow" the governing party out of the local government elections, saying it is not its fault the party missed the deadline to register candidates.

After the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) indicated it would reopen the period for parties to register candidates, the DA approached the Constitutional Court to declare this unlawful.

In response, through an affidavit by deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte, the ANC said the DA had misread the Constitutional Court's 3 September order and wanted to win the elections by "elbowing out" the competition.
