While the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has been patting itself on the back for the 1.7 million applicants who have registered, independent elections analyst Dawie Scholtz has warned that this figure ought to be a cause for concern.

Addressing the media on Monday afternoon on the outcome of the voter registration weekend, IEC chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo said the IEC had exceeded its own exceptions, and was pleased to report that over 1.7 million voters had registered during the special two-day registration weekend which took place from 18 to 19 September 2021.
