The elections will go ahead as planned, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has said, sending a clear message to political parties intending to advocate for the postponement of this year's local government elections.
"The current framework is five years plus 90 days. Secondly there is no legal platform to postpone beyond 90 days. If there was a need to postpone beyond 90 days, that platform would have to be created legislatively," deputy chief electoral officer Mawethu Mosery told News24.
This comes after the governing party, the ANC, and the EFF, the third biggest party have each made statements calling for possible postponement of elections. Both parties have also called for a synchronised election at local, provincial, and national level.
