An order that the vice-president of Equatorial Guinea pay South African businessman Daniel Janse van Rensburg millions in damages for unlawful incarceration in that country will stay in place after the Western Cape High Court refused the politician's appeal.

Janse van Rensburg was arrested and imprisoned for 423 days in Equatorial Guinea's Black Beach prison when a business deal involving an airline with vice-president Teodorin Nguema Obiang Mangue went sour. Obiang is the son of Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mbasogo.

On his return to South Africa, van Rensburg described it as "hell", and in 2021, the Western Cape High Court awarded him R39 million in damages for unlawful incarceration, torture and assault while in prison.
