The police's Crime Intelligence (CI) division this week threatened to cease cooperation with the Hawks, accusing them of incompetence, stealing dockets, and being involved in cash-in-transit (CIT) robberies as turf wars continue to rage in senior police echelons.

Three senior sources, with direct knowledge of events, confirmed that meetings on Monday and Tuesday between the police’s intelligence section, the Hawks, and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) grew heated over the country's failure to significantly address organised crime.

News24 understands that during an internal meeting on Monday, the CI threatened to cease working with the Hawks because of frustration over the quality of the elite crime-busting unit’s work, and because of deep-seated fears that some Hawks are themselves involved in serious and violent crimes. The CI however told the NPA on Tuesday it will continue to liaise with the Hawks if it sticks to its mandate.
