The Inspector-General of Intelligence (IGI) has launched an investigation into allegations that police top brass, including Police Minister Bheki Cele, police commissioner Lieutenant-General Fannie Masemola and Hawks boss Godfrey Lebeya allegedly unlawfully and irregularly issued top-secret security clearance certificates to two cops.
The IGI's investigation follows a complaint the office received in December that Cele, Masemola and Lebeya's decisions to issue the two security clearance certificates was illegal and amounted to maladministration and abuse of power.
Three senior police officers, who spoke on condition of anonymity this week, told News24 the complaint was twofold - the first part was a claim that Cele, on the recommendation of Lebeya, allegedly unlawfully issued a top-secret security clearance to a Hawks officer known as Du Plooy.
