The motorists have since been freed.

"There was a flash flood due to the rain. Unfortunately some cars got caught under the bridges in the low lying areas," spokesperson Marinus Nabal said.

About five cars were caught in the water.

Emergency rescue services were alerted just after 18:00. Upon their arrival at the scene, members of the public had already assisted all of the trapped motorists, Nabal said.

No fatalities or injuries have been reported.

All emergency services remain on high alert, should there be another storm, said Nabal.
