Five people were killed when a vehicle they were travelling in hit a tree along the N4 in Elandshoek, Mpumalanga, on Friday night.

ER24 spokesperson Verner Vermaak said paramedics had found five people trapped inside the BMW.

"Sadly, four people already succumbed to their injuries and there was nothing that paramedics could do for them. One person was found with critical injuries. Mbombela fire department assisted in extricating the patient from the vehicle."

The severely injured fifth person died in hospital.
