From a fired minister to the head of one of the branches of government – this is the leap former defence and military veterans minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula will make when she is elected Speaker of the National Assembly.

On Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced his reshuffled Cabinet – which didn't have a place for Mapisa-Nqakula, who had been a member of the executive since 2004.

Announcing that former speaker Thandi Modise would be the new defence and military veterans minister, Ramaphosa thanked Mapisa-Nqakula for her service and cryptically added that she would be "deployed to a new position".
