  • Since launching its online school admissions system in August, the Gauteng education department has received more than 300 000 online applications.
  • The department has urged parents and guardians who have not yet applied to do so urgently.
  • Phase 2 of the application process is set to start on 13 September.

The Gauteng education department has received more than 300 000 online Grade 8 applications for 2022.

According to the department, 301 510 applications were received during phase 1 of the online admission season.

Phase 1, which will close on Friday, targeted parents and guardians with children in Grade 7 applying for Grade 8 at public schools in the province.

The department's phase 1 online admission application system opened in July and had received thousands of applicants within three days of launching.

While the system ran smoothly for some, other parents experienced challenges, which included incorrect ID numbers and addresses.

The department previously pointed out that some parents also raised concerns about not receiving assistance with the verification of details from schools.

Parents and guardians who have not yet applied have been urged to do so urgently.

The department also called on people in need of assistance to visit district offices and walk-in centres or to contact the call centre on 0800 000 789.

Phase 2 of the application process will open on 13 September and will be open for parents and guardians with children who will be going to Grade 1 and Grade 8 but were not in a Gauteng public school.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has urged parents and guardians who applied to urgently upload the required documents online or provide it to the schools where they applied for admissions to be processed.

The department said applications during phase 2 will close on 8 October.
