Two directors of a Port Elizabeth based construction company were arrested for allegedly failing to submit Value Added Tax (VAT) returns amounting to R46 million.

Yasmena Pillay, 65, and Mogamat Rafiek Davids, 55, appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Port Elizabeth earlier this week where they were granted R1 000 bail each.

From 2010 to 2017, it is alleged the company belonging to the duo, failed to submit VAT returns valued at R46 million to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

"The Hawks' investigation further revealed that the company is not registered as an employer with SARS," Hawks spokesperson Captain Anelisa Ngcakani said.

The case was postponed to August 13.
