Factional battles, a leadership struggle and the battle for state resources has largely been attributed to the decay of the City of Mangaung, ANC insiders said. 

Last week after a bitter battle in the ANC's caucus, some within the party, with the help of the opposition, orchestrated a coup that left one of Ace Magashule lieutenants, Mayor Olly Mlamleli, in the cold.

According to those within the party, whom News24 have spoken to while on the ground during a visit to the City, the swift removal of Mlamleli came after many warnings to the party's highest structures in the national executive committee (NEC).
