An overhaul of the South African Police Service in the Western Cape may be necessary if there is any hope of rooting out corrupt police officers, crime experts say.
An investigation by the Western Cape police ombudsman found that allegations of links between gangs and police in the province could be substantiated.
The investigation, requested by Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, came after Western Cape High Court Judge Daniel Thulare delivered a judgment in October, stating there was evidence that gang members had infiltrated top management structures in the police.
