Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane insisted on removing maladministration findings against Ace Magashule and Mosebenzi Zwane from her report on the Gupta-linked Vrede scandal, despite investigators contending there was "sufficient evidence" against them.

After News24 first tweeted about former Public Protector investigator Nditsheni Raedani's explosive evidence and documentation about Mkhwebane's shielding of Magashule and Zwane, she responded with a single tweet, "Lies".

The programme, under which Vrede was initiated, had been championed by Magashule and saw millions earmarked for the empowerment of poor black dairy farmers allegedly being funnelled into the pockets of the Gupta family – with whom both Magashule and then Free State agriculture head Zwane were closely linked.
