"I was left a widower and 'childless'."

These were the remarks of Barney van Heerden, whose wife was brutally murdered by their adopted son, Ruan, in 2020.

On Tuesday, Ruan was convicted and sentenced for the murder of his mother, Magda van Heerden, who he stabbed more than 30 times during an attack in their home in Pretoria.
