The health department says it is not keen on the idea that South Africans be taxed more to fund the proposed National Health Insurance (NHI).

Speaking at the Pharmacy Show in Sandton on Wednesday, the deputy director-general in charge of NHI at the department, Dr Nicholas Crisp, said the NHI would ensure that everyone - no matter their socio-economic standing - had access to reliable and good healthcare services.  

"If I am sick and need healthcare now, I don't need to sell my car or my house to pay the top-up because I guessed my [medical aid] package wrong. The reason I came back to the public health sector is that healthcare is not a tradeable commodity.
