After five drought-stricken years without water, villagers in the Eastern Cape's Centane area can look forward to water after a court ruling on Friday. The ruling is another example of a community taking a crippled municipality to court to obtain basic services, writes parliamentary reporter Jan Gerber.

For over five years, residents of villages in Centane in the Eastern Cape had to walk anything between an hour to five hours – depending on how far they live from the river – to fetch water.

The water isn't potable, and sometimes the river isn't even flowing.
