In December 2018, the ANC decided 16 councillors in the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality, who sided with the opposition in a desperate bid to remove the corruption-accused mayor, should be fired from the party.

The group, fed-up by the enabling of corruption and its consequences on the lack of basic services, moved to have Mayor Vusi Tshabalala removed.

Consequently, he was promoted to the Free State legislature, where he is the ANC chief whip, and they were kicked out of the party.
