Amid demands for free higher education, which have led to protests, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has racked up R6.8 billion in irregular expenditure, while auditors raised concerns about a further R50 billion that was irregularly spent, but not disclosed.

Of this irregular expenditure, R6.3 billion is as a carry-over balance from the prior year and R522.3 million was incurred in the 2019/20 financial year.
