A leading scientist, who is battling Covid-19 through his genomic work, says if the virus is left unchecked and vaccinations are not done fast enough, it can mutate further.

But University of KwaZulu-Natal and Kwazulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (KRISP) infectious diseases specialist, Dr Richard Lessells, also said, at this stage, the deadly variant found in SA - 501Y.V2 - was not yet evolving.

"Well, it certainly is possible the virus can mutate further, if we allow transmission to go unchecked, and we don't vaccinate quickly enough. But one of the reassuring things, at the moment, is we are not seeing the evolution of the 501Y.V2."
