A male baboon which has been roaming Johannesburg's northern suburbs has reportedly been given a new home in Polokwane's mountains.

The baboon, named Jeffrey by locals, was seen at various sites, including near the Florida Veterinary Hospital and on the roof of the Life Flora Clinic in Roodepoort.

Founder of Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) Cora Bailey told Times Live the baboon was captured on Friday in the Helderkruin area in Roodepoort.

He was transported to a rehabilitation facility in Limpopo, where he was given a few days to interact with other animals, before being released.

Bailey reportedly said her team had been trying to rescue the animal since the first week of March.

"It has not been an easy task, especially because he crossed the busy N1 at least twice, and was backwards and forwards as far as our leafy northern suburbs," the organisation said in a social media post.

"We wish to thank the more than 800 people who sent WhatsApp location pins, called in sightings, or the hundreds of people who messaged to wish him well."
