A man has been burnt to death after allegedly breaking into a transformer substation to steal parts in Linden, Johannesburg.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said that the incident happened on Monday morning on 13th street.

"The unknown man is said to have broken into the transformer substation and tried to strip the live mini substation when it blew up and caught fire. He was burnt beyond recognition. Emergency services and the police attended the scene which was cleared this morning," said Mangena.

A spade and saw, which are alleged to have been used by the man, were found at the scene.

Mangena warned communities against vandalising electricity infrastructure.

The incident affected the power supply to 13th Street, Tana Road, Steve Street, and Pafuri Road. It is unclear when power will be restored.
