DA leader John Steenhuisen has said the party would not go into a coalition with the ANC as it stands at the moment - but he neither confirmed nor ruled out the possibility of this happening in future.

Steenhuisen has complained to the Press Ombudsman about a piece in the Sunday Times that quoted him as saying the DA "has opened the door to a possible coalition with the ANC should there be a stalemate in the 2024 elections", and only with President Cyril Ramaphosa as leader.

But on Monday, Steenhuisen told News24 that, although the DA "wouldn't go into a coalition with the ANC at the moment because the party is completely in a bad way and responsible for a lot that has gone wrong", it would "work with reformers in the ANC and build a new majority, but that's all predicated on bringing the ANC below 50%".
