Former North West Hawks general Jan Mabula - who is accused of authorising, and in some instances overseeing, the kidnapping and torture of suspects in detention - has managed to avoid his day in court.

Mabula, who handed in his badge and left the police service this year, was to take his place in the dock on Tuesday alongside seven of his one-time underlings - facing charges of kidnapping, assault and extortion.
