Nearly 10 000 pupils in KwaZulu-Natal travel to school daily in illegally overloaded transport, with the provincial government needing at least R1 billion to alleviate the problem.

The KZN education and transport departments both conceded that pupils are travelling in overloaded school transport, which is provided by the Learner Transport Programme.
