Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has revised the cost of repairing damaged homes following the floods in KwaZulu-Natal to R1.9 billion, as she warned that her department would not tolerate shoddy workmanship and overcharging.

Following a meeting with the eThekwini Municipality on Wednesday, the minister said no funding would be granted directly to the metro if it did not deal with concerns around corruption and inefficiency.

In an interview with News24, Kubayi said the department had assessed the damage in every ward in the province and had quantified the damage to houses at R1.9 billion – R900 million more than the initial estimation.
