Limpopo police are investigating the motive behind the murder of an attorney, Schalk Pienaar, who was shot dead at his home on Monday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said Pienaar, 69, was at home in Mokopane, with his wife, when an unknown armed man opened fire. A preliminary police investigation indicated that Pienaar collapsed after the first few shots.

Netwerk24 reported that several residents said Pienaar was apparently involved in an investigation into alleged fraud and corruption at the local municipality. There had been several recent arrests of high-ranking municipal officials and businesspeople.

He had been a lawyer for almost 40 years - and had been an MP for the former Conservative Party. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son.

No arrests have yet been made.

Marcelle Maritz, of the FF Plus in Limpopo, condemned the murder.

"Mr Pienaar and I had been friends for many years, and I want to express my deep shock and sympathy to his next of kin on behalf of the FF Plus. He was a pillar in the community, and it is lamentable that he has also become part of the country's out-of-control crime statistics," said Maritz.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe urged residents to share any information with the police.
