Johannesburg - A Limpopo police officer was killed on Thursday after he was allegedly strangled by a prisoner he was transporting to Pretoria, Gauteng traffic police said.
The warrant officer was travelling alone with the suspect, who had his arms handcuffed in front of him, spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo said.
The prisoner, who was sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle allegedly grabbed the back of the officer's neck on the N1 highway, choking the officer.
The officer lost control of the vehicle shortly after the Stormvoël off-ramp and crashed into a wall.
The officer died on impact, Nxumalo said.
The prisoner, who was critically injured during the crash, was currently in hospital under police guard.
He would face a murder charge among the other criminal charges he was already facing.
It was not immediately clear why the prisoner was being transported to Pretoria and why the officer was travelling alone with him.
