Limpopo police are on the hunt for four awaiting trial prisoners who escaped while in police custody on Sunday evening.

Police at Mahwelereng, outside Mokopane, were allegedly alerted to the escape by other inmates.

The men, aged between 26 and 38, face a range of charges from murder to robbery and rape.

Bangladesh national Mohammed Nassir, 29, was arrested in January for murder, Joseph Hlongwane, 37, was arrested in September for house robbery and rape, while Zimbabwean nationals Stanley Chiteya, 38, and Dexter Tinashe, 26, were arrested for a business robbery in November 2020.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said police were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the escape. 

"The suspects were arrested for serious and violent crimes and, as a result, community members are advised not to attempt to arrest them if they have information about their whereabouts, but must instead contact the police," Mojapelo said. 

He urged anyone with information on the matter to contact the investigating officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Sekanka, on 082 565 8505, Crime Stop on 0860 010 111, the nearest police station or MySAPSApp.
