TUT students to join student protests from next week - 'We can't wait', says SRC

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) student representative council (SRC) has spoken out against the police's alleged use of rubber bullets during student protests.

SRC president-general Mike Mothiba has condemned "ongoing police violence", calling on Police Minster Bheki Cele and President Cyril Ramaphosa to ban "the use of rubber bullets on innocent young people whose only crime was to dare dream".

Two out of four students who were arrested during a protest in Braamfontein this week have a pending case in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court heard on Tuesday.

For this reason, the State opposed their release on bail.

Acting Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka is set to meet with Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande  on Tuesday evening "as part of a multi-pronged mediation" in the ongoing student fees crisis.

Gcaleka on Monday announced that she will, over the next five weeks visit several institutions and will engage with various leadership bodies amid growing tension in the higher education sector.

She started at the University of Venda on Tuesday.

"We see this volatility every single year. The question is where is the planning?", her office wrote in a statement.

"How do we curb the arrests and the brutality at the hands of the police? We need to find lasting solutions."

Gcaleka has also requested a meeting with NSFAS CEO Andile Nongogo.
