Here's what ANC delegates said about SOEs, energy, and the R350 basic income grant

- The ANC's economic transformation commission will recommend that the Department of Public Enterprises be scrapped and state-owned companies placed with their line departments.

- The outgoing head of the economic transformation committee, Mmamaloko Kubayi, gave journalists "a taste" of what had been discussed behind closed doors.

- While the ANC did not complete its conference, policy resolutions will be tabled in January for debate and adoption.

Ramaphosa tells ANC delegates to fall in line and ‘accept new leadership’ as conference wraps up

- President Cyril Ramaphosa has adjourned the ANC’s 55th national elective conference.

- Proceedings will be reconvened on 5 January 2023 to resolve outstanding reports.

- By late on Tuesday afternoon, several conference delegates were still voting for members of the national executive committee.

In the final days of the Soviet Union, the Communist Party was riven by corruption, in charge of an inefficient and collapsing state and consumed with self-preservation. There were strong echoes of that at the ANC's national conference, writes Pieter du Toit.

True to form, the announcement of the ANC's new national executive committee has been delayed. Again.

On Tuesday evening, media members were told it would still happen that evening.

It never did.

This morning, the ANC sent out an alert that it would be announced by 10:00. That was 35 minutes ago.

The ANC communications team has just informed the media that the announcement of the full 80-member  national executive committee members will now take place at 14:00.

The briefing now looks likely to take place at the party's headquarters, Luthuli House.

The newly elected secretary general Fikile Mbalula has just arrived. As he walks in, load shedding strikes at Nasrec, causing further delays to the start of the programme.

The press briefing is about to start. ANC electoral committee chairperson Kgalema Motlanthe , secretary general Fikile Mbalula, first deputy secretary general Nomvula Mokonyane are present.

Motlanthe kicks the briefing off with a brief statement. He says the electoral committee was given a mandate to ensure that it delivers results that are credible. Motlanthe explains that every province deployed two observers.

Motlanthe says at least 91% of the delegates were able to vote given that some had left the venue. According to the former president, well over 200 candidates were on the ballot.

Motlanthe said they finalised counting the votes by 11:00 today. They are satisfied that the outcome is credible.

He says as there was no material complaints, the electoral committee is satisfied with the results.

Of the 80 additional members, 41 are women and 31 men. Given the fact that three women were already elected as national officials, the total number of women is now 44 in this recently elected NEC, which is 87 in total.

Sihle Zikalala, Mduduzi Manana and Ronald Lamola are the first three names.

Malusi Gigaba makes it onto the NEC.

Motlanthe says the total eligible delegates were 4436 in total but only 4019 cast their votes.The top five is made up of: Sihle Zikalala, Mduduzi Manana, Ronald Lamola, Mdumiseni Ntuli and Bheki Cele. Former Gauteng Premier David Makhura has also made it to the additional members of the NEC.

Bathabile Dlamini and Khusela Diko, Ramaphosa previous spokesperson, and Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma are elected to NEC.

Former North West premier Supra Mahumapelo is elected to the NEC.

Bathabile Dlamini, who was disqualified from standing, has also made it to the additional members after the NEC decided to allow her to stand on the basis that she had paid a fine after being found guilty of perjury.

Bejani Chauke, Ramaphosa's right hand man, failed to be elected as ANC treasurer general, but he does make it onto the NEC.

Mbalula thanks the electoral committee, saying they made them all proud.

Mbalula says two delegates died in road accidents while on their way back to KZN. He says the individuals where from the Mzala Xumalo region.

Mbalula says an ANC delegation would visit the families of the deceased. One individual is in hospital.

Mbalula says the top seven would have their first meeting on Thursday, while Mokonyane would make her way to Mangaung to prepare for the party’s January 8 celebrations.

Mbalula says Bathabile Dlamini has been cleared by the previous NEC to stand, but a final decision on Andile Lungisa will be made by the conference on 5 January.

"I am very happy with this NEC. It is useful," says Mbalula. He says it is like convening the youth league. He says they will be deployed, he and Mokonyane don't play, it won't be a holiday.

"A whole lot of older people have left," says Mbalula.

"Phala Phala has been dealt with in Parliament, as anything comes up, we will deal with it," says Mbalula. A new integrity committee will be established, along with all the other committees.

"The president is elected and we want him to finish his term," says Mbalula. He says Ramaphosa adds value to the ANC.

Mbalula says there was a time when the ANC had three spokesperson, which included Carl Niehaus. He says they are going to look at that model.
