The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein has found that an acting magistrate in the Free State was unfairly overlooked for a post he had applied for because of his race.

The Appeal Court has set aside the decision of the appointment committee of the Magistrates' Commission not to shortlist Richard Lawrence for appointment as a magistrate.

Lawrence, who had been an acting magistrate in Bloemfontein since 2015, was not shortlisted for a post he applied for because he is white.
