"Mama, I am going to play."

These were the last words that seven-year-old Siyabonga Mabila spoke to his mother on Saturday afternoon, shortly before he drowned in a quarry near his home in Kopanong Pienaarspoort informal settlement just outside of Mamelodi.

Siyabonga and his four-year-old friend Laurence Thwenu had decided to take a swim to cool off from the hot summer’s day in the water-filled quarry not far from their homes.
