The Mankweng Regional Court in Limpopo on Monda sentenced a 33-year-old man to an effective life imprisonment for the rape of his 12-year-old niece.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe the man raped the girl in their home at Nobody Village in Mankweng area.
The incident happened on 1 February 2019 after the man had arrived at around 20:00 while the girl's mother was out at a local spaza shop.
The name of the accused has been withheld to protect the identity of the victim who is related to her.
"After eating, he then went to the victim's room naked and dragged her to his room and raped her. The following day, the victim reported the incident to her mother who did not believe her and no action was taken against the accused.
"On 10 February 2019, there was some conflicts in the family and the victim, her mother and siblings had to run from home to their relatives at the area and that's when the victim revealed the ordeal to them," Ngoepe said.
The probe into the case was allocated to SAPS's Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit and resulted to the arrest of the man.
