Shutting beaches on the Garden Route could "kill Knysna", while Plettenberg Bay is set to lose hundreds of millions of rands in lost revenue from cancellations, according to those in charge of tourism in the area.

A "staggering" number of cancellations of holiday accommodation on the Garden Route was the order of the day on Tuesday, 15 December, following the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday night, in which he decreed that beaches on the Garden Route are to be closed – as measures to combat Covid-19 - in what has been named a hotspot.
