  • A 12-year-old boy who went missing in Delft was reportedly found in the early hours of Wednesday in Athlone.
  • He was spotted by two security guards who took him to the police station.
  • He had been on his way to his father in Mfuleni, his mother told the Daily Voice.

A Cape Town child who went missing on Tuesday was reportedly raped before he was found in the early hours of the following morning, the Daily Voice reports.

The 12-year-old boy's mother told the publication she had reported her son missing that evening after she returned to her home in Suburban, Delft and found that he wasn't there. She had last seen him that morning when she had left for work.

She reportedly said the child had told her once they were reunited that he had missed his father and wanted to go to him in Mfuleni.

On his way there, he had met two males who "took him". He was allegedly raped and then "dumped" in a bush where he slept. Security guards reportedly spotted him in Athlone and took him to the police station.

The mother told the publication that her son was "badly damaged".

Police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut confirmed to News24 that the missing child was found on Wednesday at 03:00.

"The circumstances surrounding his disappearance and the possibility that he was sexually assaulted are currently being investigated by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Investigations Unit."

Meanwhile, an Eastern Cape man who raped a mentally challenged teenager in Mount Fletcher was sentenced to life in jail.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci confirmed that Ongeziwe Mtshizana, 27, was also handed a three year sentence for kidnapping following the incident in Fobani location on 1 May 2017.

The girl had that day gone to the outside toilet and didn't return, Soci said.

"The frantic mother tried to look for her in vain. The following morning the victim was seen coming out of the suspect's home and she told her mother that the suspect kept her the whole night against her will while he continued to rape her," Soci said.

Mtshizana was this week handed the maximum sentence in the Mount Fletcher Regional Court.
