The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has announced the death of mufti of the council, Moulana Muhammad Taha Karaan.

Karaan fulfilled his role "with distinction" after taking over from his father, Moulana Yusuf Karaan, in 2015.

"We express our sincerest condolences to his immediate family, his relatives, his beloved students at the Dar al-'Ulum Al-'Arabiyyah Al-Islamiyyah Institute and each and every member of the MJC who loved and respected him," the organisation said in a statement.

The MJC has not confirmed the cause of his death.

Karaan experienced symptoms of Covid-19 at the end of May after members of his family tested positive.

His funeral will take place in Strand in an intimate setting, according to his family's wishes.

In May, six mosques in Strand were closed with immediate effect to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Strand Moslem Council secretary Sadick Fanie said the decision was taken after Moulana Ghosain Rhoda, the imam of Strand for the last 45 years, was hospitalised for Covid-19-related complications.

He died on 24 May.

The Strand Moslem Council executive announced that all six mosques (the Ummah, Nurul Anwar, Broadlands Park, Badr, Zaavia and Jamia mosques) would enter a "complete lockdown" until further notice "due to positive Covid-19 cases".

Several families in the community reported Covid-19 cases at the time, but many of the infections were traced to workplaces or schools.
