The violent extremist activity in northern Mozambique threatens massive natural offshore gas exploration projects. 

According to Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, responding to a parliamentary question, military intelligence indicates that the extremist Islamist insurgency in northern Mozambique is expected to continue, "particularly" in areas surrounding Total South Africa's R400-billion offshore gas project.
