About three years ago, Nicholas (surname withheld), now 51, went to Mozambique's northern Cabo Delgado province to set up staff quarters for the large contingent that would come to work at the newly established Total liquefied natural gas plant.

On Friday night, he found himself trying to ward off jihadist insurgents, using an AK-47 he found in an abandoned government vehicle, before fleeing into the surrounding vegetation with his two colleagues and a security guard.

That was the last information his daughter, had from a staff member at the Amarula Hotel in Palma, where her father stayed while he worked in Mozambique. Insurgents attacked the village this week.
