Leaders attending the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit have advised President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique that Rwanda should work through the regional structure if it wanted to help fight the insurgency in Cabo Delgado province.
News24 understands that Nyusi's request to SADC leaders during a special double troika summit last week on whether Rwanda could participate in its meetings in helping Mozambique to stabilise the insurgency in the north of the country, was met with resistance.
This followed a meeting between Nyusi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Rwanda at the end of April. It is understood that they discussed the Rwanda experience in helping to combat terrorism, as well as its involvement in attempting to bring stability in the Central African Republic.
