With increases in municipal bills against the backdrop of inflation hikes and ever-rising petrol prices, households are expected to feel the screws tightening which could lead to social unrest and job losses in the domestic worker sector.

On 1 July, metros across the country introduced new tariffs, which were expected to leave already distressed households with little recourse, according to economist Professor Chris Malikane who said the latest municipal increases would have a massive effect on the purchasing power of households in the country.
