With the combined water levels of dams feeding the Nelson Mandela Bay metro dipping below 12%, fears are mounting that the Eastern Cape's biggest metro could run dry before Christmas.
The metro is now fast tracking the process of building a seawater desalination plant that will turn water from the Indian Ocean into drinking water for its residents.
To avoid Day Zero, the municipality have implemented stringent water restrictions, while making use of alternative water supplies, including boreholes, water tankers and installing restrictors to curb consumption.
