"We cherish a great user experience and this utility provides an intelligent, one-stop solution which we are very excited about," says Chris Middleton, deputy director of ecosystem development at Huawei.

The News24 app is now also among the more than 60 000 apps available in the Huawei AppGallery.

Huawei – the world's biggest maker of mobile telecommunications equipment and smartphones – has been forging its own path in response to a number of US sanctions, which has restricted its access to the advanced computer chips the company needs to build its gear and smartphones.

The sanctions have also seen users blocked from using the Google Play Store – the digital shop that houses applications like Facebook, WhatsApp and Snapchat, as well as ebooks, rental movies and more – on Huawei's smartphones.

The response from the Chinese company has been to launch a range of new smartphones and features using its own technology.

"Media24 is delighted with the launch of our news feed as it allows us to reach more of our readers who will now be able to read News24 on their new Huawei phones," says Ishmet Davidson, CEO of Media24.

"We have seen a considerable acceleration in the readership of News24 since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, with thousands of additional readers using our service over the last few months as a trusted source of keeping up to date with news and data. Readers using Huawei phones have always been a large portion of our audience and we believe that their new generation of phones will accelerate this as News24 will now even be easier to access on their new HMS [Huawei Mobile Services] platform."
