While the decision to refrain from arresting any of the people who illegally gathered outside former president Jacob Zuma's homestead in Nkandla was correct, the situation could have been avoided entirely with proactive policing, according to officers and policing experts.

Following the Constitutional Court ruling that Zuma be imprisoned for 15 months after being found guilty of contempt of court, loyal supporters, including the MKVA, descended on Nkandla in contravention of the Disaster Management Act regulations.

News24 reported that some of the supporters also fired shots.
