The Auditor-General's (AG) office has given a scathing account of financial deterioration and lack of management in the eThekwini Municipality, which had an increase of 94% in irregular expenditure.
A litany of issues arose when AG official Vanuja Maharaj presented the state of the 2021/22 finances on the increasingly embattled east coast city.
Among these were councillors and officials who failed to report family members doing business with the municipality, wastewater treatment plants with no licences and continued abuse and flouting of supply chain procedures.
