Former ANC MP Dr Mike Basopu, who is touted for the vacant Buffalo City Metro deputy mayor position, allegedly registered for a PhD in public administration from the University of Fort Hare unlawfully.
The allegation is contained in a report compiled by the university, which it sent to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) as part of its evidence into an investigation regarding a degree scam at the university.
In the report, signed by a senior university official, the university suggested that Basopu failed to meet minimum requirements for entry into the programme but was later allowed to study without entering the university via the legal channels.
