The discovery of the new Omicron variant has focussed the need for global vaccine equity.

Health experts said the emergence of the new variant identified by South African scientists is a by-product of unheeded warnings about vaccine inequality that could prolong the Covid-19 pandemic even further.

Epidemiologist and member of the African Task Force for Coronavirus, Professor Salim Abdool Karim has lambasted rich countries hoarding the lion's share of vaccines.
